Why is the Church ONE (p. 283) The Church is one because all its members believe in the one Lord, Jesus Christ. The Church is one because we all share the same Baptism and together are the one Body of Christ. The Church is one because we are guided and united by the Holy Spirit under the leadership of the pope and bishops; we are one in the sacraments we celebrate and in the laws that helps us to live as disciples of Christ and faithful members of the Church.
Why is the Church HOLY? (p. 283) God alone is good and holy. But God shared his holiness with all people by sending his Son to us. And Christ shares his holiness with us today through the Church, where we are first made holy in Baptism. Then, through our lives, we are called to holiness by the Church-a holiness that stems from the gift of grace that we receive in the sacraments, from the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and from the practice of the virtues.
Why is the Church Catholic? See page 285 The word catholic means universal- worldwide and open to all people everywhere. The Church has been universal since its beginning. Jesus commissioned his Apostles, saying, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19). Thus, the Apostles traveled wherever they could to preach the Gospel message. They baptized believers and established local Church communities. The Church continued to grow, and today there are Catholics all across the world.
Why is the Church APOSTOLIC? See page 285 The fourth mark of the Church is apostolic or built on the faith of the Apostles. Jesus chose the Apostles to care for and lead the community of believers. He gave them the mission of spreading the good news and baptizing new members of the Church. The Church is apostolic today because the life and leadership of the Church are based on that of the Apostles. The pope- the bishop of Rome- and all the bishops, the succesors of the Qpostles, continue this ministry of the Apostles today.
